John Woods Obituary

Rogersville: John Samuel "J.S." Woods, Sr., age 95 of Rogersville, passed away, Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at his residence. He was retired from Tennessee Eastman. Mr. Woods was a charter member and deacon of Tarpine Valley Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor following the invasion. Mr. Woods was 50+ year member of Overton Lodge No. 5 F. & A.M., Hasson Chapter No. 179 Order of the Easter Star; a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner, He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Norma Jean Mowl Woods; daughter, Peggy Johnson; parents, Robert and Kate Snapp Woods; grandson, Robert Roberson; sister, Pauline Arnold; brothers, Aldridge Woods, Grady Woods, Donald Woods and Charles Woods; son-in-law, Glenn Simpson.

He is survived by his daughters, Judy Trent and husband, Bruce, Melissa Roark and husband, Stan; sons, Sammie Woods and wife, Kaye, Billy D. Woods and wife, Christy all of Rogersville; grandchildren, Rodney Roberson and wife, Leighann, Rebecca Barnette and husband, Kelly, Samantha Edwards and husband, Chad, Greg Simpson and Haley, Danielle Williams and husband, Brock, Jose Jones and husband, Dustin; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Shelby, Claire, Aidan, Sterling, Cash, Cole, Logan,Sawyer, River and Blair Kate; great-great grandsons, Jameson, Mason, Liam and Axton; sister-in-law, Fawn Woods of Gastonia, NC; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Jane Jesse, Jeff Alley and John Mertz; a special thank you to Callie Peterson, Carol Masters, Garrett Stroud, Christy Bledsoe and Sandra Johnson.

Visitation hours will be 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville. Masonic funeral rites will be performed by Overton Lodge No. 5 F. & A.M. prior to the funeral service.

Funeral service will be conducted 8:00 P.M., Thursday, May 23, 2019 in the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Garland Long officiating. Graveside service will be 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Woods Family Cemetery with military honors provided by Hawkins County Color Guard and the U.S. Navy.
