PATSY LOUISE CARPENTER BOYD

Patsy (Pat) Louise Carpenter Boyd died on June 28, 2026, after several years of declining health. 
Pat, who was her mother’s namesake, began life as the sixth of seven children of Louise and J.J. Carpenter.  Like her siblings, Pat was born at home in the house built by her father in the Clouds Creek Community of Rogersville, Tennessee.

Pat spent her childhood with countless Carpenter Cousins, all growing up together nearby on Clouds Creek. Throughout her life, Pat derived great joy from relationships she nurtured with her Carpenter Cousins and their descendants.

As a teenager, Pat blossomed as a young poet and gifted pianist, eventually spending a high school summer studying piano performance at The Chicago Conservatory of Music.  At 17, she wrote a poem, “At Dawn,” published in the National Anthology of High School Poetry and later selected by the Poetry Society of Los Angeles for its “Songs of Youth” poetry volume. After high school, Pat won a state-wide beauty pageant allowing her to travel throughout Tennessee as part of her duties. 

In September 1961, after several years of high school romance, Pat married Phillip Larry Boyd, a Rogersville native and East Tennessee State University student. They soon welcomed daughters, Hannah and Julia. When Larry was accepted to The University of Tennessee College of Law, the family moved to Knoxville, guided by Pat’s steady support and devotion.
Larry later returned to Rogersville to establish his law practice, and Pat embraced life as a busy wife and mother, a role she often said was her most cherished. She created a warm and welcoming home, became an accomplished bridge player and hostess, enjoyed golf as a member of McDonalds Country Club Ladies Golf groups, served as a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader and was President of the Rogersville City School PTA.

In the years that followed, Pat and Larry’s family grew with the arrival of two more children, Susan and Daniel, completing the family that would remain the center of Pat’s heart. Summers were always a highlight for Pat, including time spent at the beach with her rapidly growing family.  

Pat was deeply committed to the Rogersville community she loved. She was a long-time board member of the Rogersville Heritage Association and Chairman of the Hawkins County Library Board during construction of its new library facility.

In 1984, Pat earned an accounting degree from East Tennessee State University after years as a non-traditional college student, pursuing classes at night and commuting to campus while continuing to care for her family.

A devoted, long-time member of Rogersville Presbyterian Church, Pat served as Clerk of the Session, Trustee, Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Circle Leader and Vacation Bible School Director.

Pat’s talents seemed endless; her intellect was remarkable. Born with the Carpenter green thumb, she found refuge in the soil, expertly tending immaculate gardens brimming with roses, lilies and assorted flowers. The repertoire of recipes in her memory bank would impress any chef; her ability to orchestrate a beautiful dinner party or family holiday gathering was unparalleled. Yet when asked about her greatest joy in life, Pat was always clear and emphatic: “My Family”. 

Pat is survived by her husband of 64 years, Phillip Larry Boyd, her children: Hannah Boyd Bell and husband, Forrest of Atlanta, Julia Hoover and husband, Larry of Nashville, Susan Rice and husband, Barry of Rogersville, Daniel Boyd and wife, Melissa of Rogersville, Tn., grandchildren: Will Hoover, Forrest Bell, Jr. and wife Katlyn, Hannah Hoover, Peyton Bell, Kathryn Hoover, Carter Rice, Carson Rice, Eli Boyd, Carly Rice and Anna Mae Boyd. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a multitude of Carpenter Cousins. 

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, at Rogersville Presbyterian Church.

Interment will follow funeral service at McKinney Cemetery.
